Athletics Fields Project
The Minuteman School Committee voted to approve the construction of three new synthetic turf athletic fields on October 27, 2020. (View the School Committee presentation.)The athletic fields mark the final phase of the school construction project, which resulted in the opening of the new Minuteman High School building in September 2019 and received considerable funding from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). Construction of the fields began in November 2020. The first field (football/lacrosse/multipurpose) opened in October 2021. The remaining two fields (softball and baseball) opened for use in April 2022 while amenities remain under construction.
The athletic fields are important to Minuteman’s mission of providing a revolution in learning, which extends to fitness, wellness, and social-emotional growth. The three fields would support the following school sports teams: football, boys’ and girls’ soccer, cross country, baseball, softball, and boys lacrosse, with a potential for future girls’ lacrosse and girls’ field hockey.
There are three synthetic turf fields: 1) a “multi-sport” field to include football, lacrosse, and other sports; 2) a multi-use softball field; and 3) a multi-use baseball field. There will be dugouts, bullpens, and batting cages included with the multi-use softball and baseball fields, and scoreboards and utilities for each field. There will also be an asphalt walking track around the multi-sport/football field. In November 2020, the School Committee approved an amendment to include field lighting as part of the project.
Minuteman’s strong commitment to a robust athletics program. Sports are a crucial component of the high school experience for many of our students, who learn about sportsmanship, teamwork, and physical fitness. While it’s important to remain focused on the immediate needs of one another, it’s just as important to ensure our current and future students continue to have a revolutionary, competitive advantage at Minuteman High School.
