Coronavirus [COVID-19]: March 11, 2020

The following letter was issued to Minuteman High School students, parents/guardians, and staff regarding precautions around the Coronavirus on Wednesday, March 11, 2020:

Dear Minuteman High School Community,

As the number of cases of Coronavirus (also known as COVID-19) around Massachusetts continues to increase, we would like to provide you an update on the precautions we are taking at Minuteman High School. We are following guidelines provided by local, state, and national officials, and will continue to closely monitor the updates they provide.

At this time, no students or staff at Minuteman have, or are suspected to have, COVID-19.

For regular updates, please visit minuteman.org/coronavirus where we have also listed information pertaining to each of the towns most served by Minuteman.

We are continuing to take precautions to prevent students and staff from potential exposure while in our custody and care, while also balancing the need to minimally disrupt students from daily activities.

Steps we are taking include:

  • Increasing signage inside our building to remind students, staff, and visitors to take basic precautions. These messages are posted in highly visible locations, including entrances, hallways, restrooms, and on TV screens, reminding everyone to:
    • Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
    • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or sleeve (not your hands)
    • Stay away from people who are sick and stay home if you are sick
  • Using disinfectant to cleanse our building daily. This has been ongoing for two weeks. All of our custodians are trained in disinfectant procedures.
  • Taking note of students exhibiting respiratory or flu-like symptoms and evaluating them in the nurses’ office.
  • Cancelling all out-of-state field trips, including a trip to Puerto Rico that was planned for late March. We have spoken directly with the affected students to inform them of this decision. We are continuing to review the status of local field trips but have not cancelled them at this time.

In order to ensure our students are informed about our precautions, along with daily learning activities, we remind you that all students are required to conduct schoolwork using their Minuteman.org email accounts and cannot use their personal, non-Minuteman email accounts for school purposes. Cybersecurity is another important reason why this is required.

We encourage any student or parent/guardian with concerns about internet access from home to contact Principal George Clement by email or calling the main office at 781-861-6500 x 7217 or x7219.

While we have no information to suggest the need to close school at this time, please note that the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is not requiring districts to hold classes beyond its scheduled 185th day of the school year, or June 30, whichever comes first, in light of potential school closings due to COVID-19.

For more information about COVID-19 in Massachusetts, visit the Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 website, which includes fact sheets in multiple languages.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff is always our top priority, and we are making decisions in the best interests of our entire community.

Sincerely,

Ed Bouquillion
