Message to Minuteman Community About Recent Events

Superintendent-Director Edward A. Bouquillon issued the following letter to all Minuteman students, families, and staff on Wednesday, June 3, 2020:

Dear Minuteman High School Community,

We are all deeply troubled by the ongoing events in the nation, which have escalated in the past week due to the killing of a black man, George Floyd, while in police custody in Minneapolis. This tragedy has highlighted systemic injustices that face minority groups in America, particularly African-Americans and people of color.

As we do our best to remain positive in the face of unprecedented issues, and as we prepare for the Minuteman High School Class of 2020 graduation this Friday, I ask all of you to take a moment for reflection. Ask yourself how you, in your everyday life, can share love, empathy, and support for one another – especially today.

We are all upset by the unrest that continues to unfold locally and nationally, regardless of which side of the political spectrum you are on. During this difficult time, I ask you to share the values that bond us as a Minuteman community, which includes respect, inclusion, empathy, and love. Give one another the space to speak and process our thoughts. For students, please know that you can speak with any trusted adult at Minuteman, including teachers and staff members. Additionally, our counseling staff is always available for students and staff. Parents/guardians should contact us if you are seeking additional mental health resources.

Finally, I would like to remind all students, faculty, and staff, that Minuteman renounces racism in the strongest possible terms. If any student or staff member is found to be sending messages that violate the terms of our code of conduct policies, which protects against racism, bullying, homophobia, and members of protected classes, they will be subject to consequences outlined in our policies.

Love always conquers fear. Our nation has been tested before, and as a country, as a community, and as a school, we will get through this together.

Please continue to love and lift up one another. And, just as importantly, please stay safe.
