Minuteman: The Beginning 1974-1977

Rose Hawthorne Bldng

Minuteman started with 12 towns. The towns wanted to build a school where students could learn a trade as well as academics. It began in an old Wayland school where Mr. Saines, his staff, and teachers made the first plans for Minuteman. The new building wasn’t ready for the students at the planned time, so... Minuteman’s first class began school at Rose Hawthorne in Concord. With 450 students, almost as confused as the teachers and S.P.C.s were, it took a while to get things straightened out. Of course Rosey didn’t have half the size or equipment as the new school would, but everyone managed.

Back to school, after Christmas vacation, was a day of excitement....

Our first day in the new school. Eyes lit up at the first sight of the trades hall which we were ushered into.

The school was a labyrinth. Tardy slips were in abundance because half the kids couldn’t tell the north from the south side or the first from the third floor.

Trades Hall

We finally settled in after a few weeks, and we began to realize just how much Minuteman had to offer. We not only had the best equipment and tools but highly qualified teachers and a concerned staff.

Things began happening...

Students, teachers, and staff began to make things happen. We opened a restaurant, beauty salon, gas station, child care center, printing department, and two mall stores.

Those 12 towns can be proud of Minuteman, it's opportunities, and it's first graduating class.
