Minuteman High School Students Step Up After Storm to Clear Campus Tree

Lexington, MA — On the morning of December 11th, following a severe rainstorm with high winds, a large Scotch Pine (Pinus Sylvestris) estimated to be 35-40 feet tall came crashing down on Minuteman High School’s property, blocking the school’s rotary. While the tree was quickly moved to allow students and staff access to the building, its removal posed a significant challenge—and expense.
Minuteman Vocational Technical High School, located in Lexington and surrounded by conservation and historical land, offers 19 career technical majors where students gain real-world, hands-on experience alongside award-winning academics. In the Horticultural and Plant Science program, led by instructors Pete Kelleher and Sarah Ard, a storm cleanup became an opportunity for meaningful learning. By dedicating their classes’ time and expertise, they had the idea of transforming this challenge into an educational project right in our backyard.
Sophomores and seniors braved the weather to prep the area, removing smaller sticks and debris before diving into chainsaw instruction. Under the close supervision of Mr. Kelleher, senior students practiced safe and effective chainsaw techniques, turning a fallen tree into an invaluable learning opportunity. This is where the magic of a vocational school shines, our students aren’t just learning in a classroom—they’re out in the field, applying their skills to real-life challenges whether that is on campus or during their Coop experiences. Over the next several weeks, the students will complete the task by removing all remaining debris, showcasing their dedication and expertise while maintaining the school’s pristine campus.
“We’re incredibly fortunate to have such talented students and instructors who take exceptional care of our property,” said Principal Paul D’Alleva. “This is vocational education at its best: solving problems, learning valuable skills, and contributing to the community.”
Minuteman High School is proud to highlight its students and staff's hard work and passion. This project saved the school the cost of professional tree removal and gave our Horticultural students the chance to show all their exceptional skills.
