Cooperative Education

The Co-op program makes it possible for students to receive outside work experience instead of attending their vocational shop, usually during their senior year. Normally, students work a 37.5 hour week, every other week, and they are paid the same as their co-workers who perform the same job. A student’s employer becomes his or her teacher and evaluates the student’s performance.

In order for a student to participate in the Co-op program, he/she must maintain good grades, have a good attendance record, and be recommended by his or her teachers. In order to qualify, a student must be:

  • Member of the Senior Class with at least two years in the same Technical area
  • Recommended by shop teacher, related teacher, and by Senior Teacher
  • Competent in shop to the Mastery level
  • Approved by Assistant Principal’s Office
  • Determined eligible by Director of Guidance using final grades and attendance from junior year for first quarter placement.
    1. Fourth quarter cannot include an F or two D’s in task or conduct grade in any required subjects.
    2. An F or 2nd D in the fourth quarter can be superseded by a passing final grade of C or better.
    3. Attendance must equal 92% for the year. Exceptions would be major illness or hospitalization. Tardiness: two tardies equal one absence in determining attendance for the year.

Special working papers are required for Co-op students. These are issued to Co-op students as part of the process prior to beginning work. The information submitted is similar to regular working papers for 16 and 17 year olds.
