Kenny's project is the isolation of virus from soil. It involves the collection of soil samples, and the isolation of any bacteriophage from the soil. Then the phage are incubated with E. coli. The presence of plaques indicate that phage are present.
Amber's project is the testing of various commercial sun screens to see their effectiveness. This project first involved light sensitive yeast and then  E. coli bacteria. The microbes were plated as lawns and exposed to UV light in a time trial to calculate their sensitivity. Then the sun screens were tested to see if they would protect the microbes from the harmful effects of UV radiation.
Charlene's project is the isolation of antifungal agents from bacteria. It involves the collection of water samples, and the isolation of any bacteria present. The bacteria are also identified using Gram staining and Enterotube II methods. Then the bacteria are grown up and any anti fungal compounds produced are made into antifungal disks and used to see if they will inhibit the growth of fungus.
Desiree's project is to test for antibiotic resistance of bacteria. It involves the collection of water samples, and the isolation of any bacteria present. The bacteria are tested for antibiotic resistance to a panel of antibiotics. The bacteria are also identified using Gram staining and Enterotube II methods.
Derek's project is to learn as many Biotechnology techniques as possible in a ten week attachment to the Biotechnology area. This includes lab safety, aseptic technique, and the use of lab equipment Other methods are culturing bacteria and their use in isolation and lawn making techniques. It also involves identification of bacteria using Gram staining and Enterotube II techniques. In addition, molecular biology techniques will be introduced.
